What Is Yoga? Originating in Sanskrit, the word “yoga” means “union”. A union of body, mind and spirit.
The ancient Indian sculptures of yoga postures called asanas, prove that Yoga is more than 5000 years old. As opposed to the general Western opinion, yoga is not a form of religion. The only connection between yoga and religion can be found in the original meaning of the latter word, originating from the Latin word “re-ligiare” (“reunite”). As mentioned before, this is also the process or state described by the word “yoga”. Yoga comprises a system of techniques that can help modern man improve every aspect of his health – physical, mental and spiritual. Hatha yoga is the most popular type of yoga in the West, also in Slovenia. It is based on practising the postures called asanas, breathing techniques or pranayamas and other traditional yogic techniques such as kriyas, bhandhas and mudras. The techniques help us balance the body at different levels, resulting in improvement of psychosomatic health and an increased energy flow.
